Bucket of Blood Saloon

The Bucket of Blood Saloon is one of Virginia City's most iconic establishments. Here, you can enjoy dinner, ice-cold beer, and live music, performed by their excellent house band, David John and the Comstock Cowboys.

Depending on the time you visit, you stand a good chance of watching, or participating, in one of the many quirky events that take place around the saloon. These include a number of unique races, including Camel Races, Ostrich Races, and Outhouse Races. Check the Bucket of Blood Saloon's Events schedule for more information.

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Bucket of Blood Saloon was originally constructed in 1876, just after Virginia City was virtually destroyed by the Great Fire of 1875. Although the saloon has undergone a number of renovations over the years, it has remained at the same location throughout it existence.

In 1997, a group of archeologists determined that the Bucket of Blood Saloon was actually constructed over another saloon, the Boston Saloon. Numerous artifacts from the Boston Saloon have been excavated over a period of time, giving us a fascinating glimpse into the past. The Boston Saloon is historically significant due to the fact it was the only saloon in the West owned by an African American (William Brown) at the time.

In the early 1930s, the saloon was purchased by the Versal McBride. The Bucket of Blood Saloon has been owned and operated by the McBride family since then.

Every time I visit Virginia City, the Bucket of Blood is a must. It's an old time saloon with wooden floors and a fully stocked bar. I may not drink alcohol, but I love visiting.

It was recommended that we stop in at the Bucket of Blood and I am so glad we did. The bartender was very nice and made a great drink. We visited during the off season so it was rather quiet. The view is amazing and free popcorn too! It is a definite stop for everyone.

I wanted my son to see the old western town. We stopped in the joint and everyone was friendly. During the day its quiet and calm. Got some popcorn, took pictures and rolled out.
